As you think about your reasons for writing, realize there are good motives and not-so-good ones. How can you tell if your motives are worthwhile?
Ask yourself: • "Is the main reason I'm writing this to defend myself or justify my actions?" • "Am I trying to prove something with this report, or do these readers really need it? Will it be valuable to them?" • "If I'm totally honest with myself, am I just trying to impress these readers with what I know? • "Is there a chance I'm writing this to make myself look better than a rival?"
If your answer to any of these questions is yes, you might want to rethink your reasons for writing, not just to save readers' time, but your own, as well as your reputation as a breakthrough-bound pro who wouldn't dream of wasting readers' time on writing that's not worth their time and energy.
